Privacy Policy

The short version: Quota does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal data. Everything the app records stays on your Mac.

Quota ("the app") is a macOS menu-bar utility for monitoring network speed and tracking data usage against quotas. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information.

1. Who we are

Quota is developed by Mohamed Mostafa Fawzi ("we", "us", the "Developer").

2. Data we collect

We do not collect any personal data. Quota has no user accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no third-party tracking SDKs, and no servers that receive your information. The app processes everything locally on your device.

The app works with the following information entirely on your Mac:

  • Network byte counts (per network interface) — to show live speeds and tally data usage — stored locally only.
  • Wi-Fi network name (SSID) — to label and match usage to the correct quota — stored locally only.
  • Connection latency measurements — to display connection responsiveness — stored locally only.
  • Your quota settings and preferences — to run the app the way you configured it — stored locally only.

None of this is ever sent off your device.

3. Location

macOS only reveals the name of your current Wi-Fi network (SSID) to apps that have Location permission. Quota requests Location access for this single purpose: to read your current Wi-Fi network name so it can attribute data usage to the right quota (for example, to keep "Home" and "Office" separate).

  • Your geographic location is never stored, logged, or transmitted.
  • The Wi-Fi network name is used only as a label and stays on your Mac.
  • Location is optional. If you decline it, Quota still works — Wi-Fi networks simply appear as a generic "Wi-Fi" and cannot be told apart.
  • Location data is not used for advertising, profiling, or tracking of any kind.

4. Network monitoring

Quota reads aggregate byte counters that macOS maintains for each network interface (via the system sysctl interface). These are simple totals of bytes sent and received. Quota does not, and technically cannot, inspect the contents of your network traffic — it sees no browsing history, no websites, no messages, and no packet contents. The app runs in Apple's App Sandbox with client-only networking.

5. Latency measurements

To show connection responsiveness, Quota opens a brief TCP connection to a host you choose (by default 1.1.1.1) and measures how long the connection takes to establish. This is an ordinary network connection and carries no personal data. You can change or disable this host in Settings. (This is TCP connect time, not an ICMP "ping", because the App Sandbox does not permit raw ICMP.)

6. Purchases (tips)

Quota offers optional tips through Apple's In-App Purchase system. If you choose to tip, the transaction is processed entirely by Apple. We never receive or store your payment card details, billing address, or Apple Account information. Apple's handling of purchases is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. Tips are voluntary and unlock no features.

7. Notifications

If you enable notifications, Quota schedules local notifications on your device (for example, when you approach a data limit). These are generated on your Mac and are not sent through any external service.

8. Data storage and retention

All app data is stored in Quota's private sandbox container on your Mac. The app keeps only what it needs:

  • Hourly usage totals: the current billing period plus one prior period.
  • Detailed speed samples: the most recent 24 hours.

You can remove all of this at any time by deleting the app. Because nothing is stored on our side, deleting the app removes your data completely.

9. Sharing

We do not share, sell, rent, or disclose your information to anyone, because we do not collect it in the first place. There are no third-party data recipients.

10. Children's privacy

Quota is not directed to children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.

11. Your rights

Because all data stays on your device and under your control, you can view, change, or delete it directly within the app or by removing the app. If you have questions about your privacy, contact us at the address below.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
